Two international research grants for 2026 are now open:
1. Request for Proposals: Humane Fish Slaughter Research/Prototypes (Deadline: 1 Jul 2026)
2. Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowship (Deadline: 1 Jul 2026)
———————————————————————-
1. Request for Proposals: Humane Fish Slaughter Research/Prototypes

The program supports projects on technologies and prototypes that materially improve the welfare of fish at capture and slaughter: rendering pre-death insensibility instantaneous, long-lasting (ideally permanent), verifiable, and scalable under the physical constraints of aquaculture and fisheries operations.

Funding Organization: Coefficient Giving

Scope: The focus is on solutions that are practical for fishing vessels with limited power and space, work effectively for small wild fish caught in large quantities, or serve as alternatives to or improvements upon existing electrical stunning technologies for farmed fish. Additionally, there is openness to solutions within the immediate pre-slaughter pipeline that do not involve stunning, provided they have the potential to improve the welfare of hundreds of millions of fish.

Eligibility: Applications are open to proposals of varying sizes and scopes — from exploratory research to advanced prototype development (i.e. up to ~TRL 7-8). Applications from across the R&D ecosystems, including: individuals; universities and research institutions; small, medium, and large companies; and public sector research organizations, are encouraged. Successful teams will likely be somewhat interdisciplinary, combining expertise in biology, electrical/mechanical engineering, aquaculture, and/or animal welfare science.

Maximum Award: Maximum budget per project is not specified. The total available budget for this call is 7 million USD.

Application Process: Letters of Intent are due 1 July 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit full proposals. Invited full proposals are due September 30, 2026.

Application Deadline: 1 July 2026

2. Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowship

The Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowships provide funding for outstanding international researchers to undertake their sabbatical leave at a UK university or research institution. The fellowships can be for 12 months full-time or can be spread over a 24-month period, with a minimum 3 month visit period at any time over the course of the 24 months (totalling 12 months).

Funding Organization: The Wolfson Foundation and the Royal Society, UK

Scope: Natural sciences, including but not limited to biological research and biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics.

Eligibility: Applicants may be of any nationality who are:
• a mid- or senior career researcher, with a proven track record for high-quality scientific research, which may include, as appropriate: a strong publication record, being invited to conferences as keynote speaker and evidence of scientific leadership and/or supervising or mentoring junior researchers
• currently based outside UK and and have not developed significant collaborations with the host institution before this fellowship. Nominations will not be accepted for researchers wishing to move between UK institution.
• whose research is within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research and biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. For a full list, please see the breakdown of subject groups and areas supported by the Royal Society.

Maximum Award: Applicants may apply for up to 125,000 GBP in funding to support sabbaticals for up to 2 years.

Application Process:
Researchers must be nominated by a representative of the host institution before they are able to apply for the Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship:
• The Head of Department (or their nominated representative) will need to contact the Royal Society Grants Office by email on seniorfellowships@royalsociety.org and will be sent a link to a nomination form
• After the completed nomination form has been considered by the Royal Society, the Head of Department (nominator) will be sent a link to invite the nominated researcher (applicant) to complete and submit a full application on Flexi-Grant.

Application Deadline: 1 July 2026
