1. Starter Grant Programme 2027
 
The University of Bayreuth Starter Grant Programme 2027 supports outstanding international researchers in developing collaborative research projects with researchers at the University of Bayreuth, Germany.
 
Scope: Any academic discipline
 
Eligibility: The programme is open to international researchers who meet the following requirements.
 
Applicants must:
• Be affiliated with an institution outside Germany
• Hold a completed PhD degree
• Have officially received their doctoral degree before applying
• Demonstrate strong academic achievements
• Propose a collaborative research project with the University of Bayreuth
 
Applicants must identify a local academic host at the University of Bayreuth before submitting their application.
 
The local host researcher should:
• Collaborate on the proposed research project
• Provide academic support
• Offer access to research facilities where required
• Provide office or laboratory space and necessary infrastructure
 
Awards: Grantees will receive the awarded sum of 10,000 € for covering costs related to the proposed research stay incl. travel, accommodation, fees, subsistence expenses, staff and related costs. The local host at the University of Bayreuth receives a monthly subsidy of 500 € (humanities and social sciences), respectively 800 € (natural, life and engineering sciences) during the Grantee’s stay at the University of Bayreuth.

2. FRIAS Early Career Fellowship Programme 2027/28
 
The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), the international research college of the University of Freiburg, Germany, invites researchers with a completed doctoral degree and a maximum of eight years of post-doctoral experience to apply for the FRIAS Early Career Fellowship Programme 2027/28. The fellowships (4 to 10 months) are available to researchers from any nationality and discipline based in Freiburg, Germany and abroad. The programme offers access to the resources, networks, and academic community of the University of Freiburg, enhancing fellow’s research through new perspectives and collaborative opportunities.
 
Scope: Any academic discipline
 
Eligibility:
• Applications are welcome from any nationality and discipline that can be supported at the University of Freiburg. Applicants are encouraged to learn more about the University of Freiburg’s research strengths and areas of focus.
• Applicants must hold a completed doctoral degree plus a maximum of eight years of post-doctoral experience.
• Applicants must have 4 peer-reviewed publications since 1 January 2022.
• Applicants must have at least six months’ research or study experience at academic institution(s) in a country different from the country of their first academic degree by the time of application.
 
Awards: Early Career Fellowships include a full-time employment contract with the University of Freiburg, valid for the duration of the fellowship. An Early Career researcher receives approximately €5,300 per month pre-tax and pre-social security contribution. For Fellows with an employment contract at their home institution, a reimbursement of teaching replacement costs throughout the fellowship is possible. Each Fellow will also receive a research cost contribution, and reimbursement for travel costs of the inbound and the outbound journey to Freiburg (if applicable).

Eligibility:
• Applications are welcome from any nationality and discipline that can be supported at the University of Freiburg. Applicants are encouraged to learn more about the University of Freiburg’s research strengths and areas of focus.
• Applicants must hold a completed doctoral degree plus a minimum of eight years of post-doctoral experience.
• Applicants must have 10 peer-reviewed publications since 1 January 2022.
• Applicants must have at least six months’ research or study experience at academic institution(s) in a country different from the country of their first academic degree by the time of application.
 
Awards:
• Successful applicants will become FRIAS Fellows with all the corresponding rights and obligations for the approved funding period.
• Fellows with an employment contract at their home institution will receive a mobility allowance (if applicable) to compensate them for the extra costs of their stay in Freiburg. A reimbursement of teaching replacement costs throughout the fellowship up to the level of a W2 professorship is possible.
• Fellows without an employment contract at their home institution will obtain an attractive salary (W2, 100%) on the condition of receiving no other income during the time of the fellowship. In case of a continued reduced salary by the home institution or alternative incomes, individual arrangements are subject to negotiation.
• Each Fellow will additionally receive a research cost contribution and will be reimbursed for the travel costs of the inbound and the outbound journey to Freiburg (if applicable).

4. Wellcome Discovery Awards
 
This award provides funding for established researchers and teams from any discipline and based in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or low- and middle-income countries who want to pursue bold and creative research ideas to deliver significant shifts in understanding related to human life, health and wellbeing.
 
Funding Organization: Wellcome Trust
 
Research Scope: Dicovery research that has the potential to improve human life, health, and wellbeing.
 
Eligibility: The scheme is open to established researchers who
• have the experience needed to drive and lead a research program,
• have a track record of managing and training others,
• have a permanent, open-ended, or long-term rolling contract, and
• are based in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or low- and middle-income countries, excluding India and mainland China.
 
Maximum Award: The average size of a Discovery Award is £3.5 million for up to an 8-year duration.
 
Application Process: Applications must be submitted to the Wellcome Funding platform (https://funding.wellcome.org).
